They’re just not that into you…
You have the right experience, a relevant work history, great qualifications and you did an impressive job of answering questions in your interview. What could go wrong? Well for starters someone on the interview team could rightly or wrongly perceive that your values do not align with the company’s. Heck maybe they’re just not into you, after all, that suit you are wearing is so 2002.
Suppose you were going to interview at a company that produces golf clubs. It’s fair to say that most of the folks that work at this company enjoy golfing on the weekends. In assessing a candidate’s culture fit should they rule out someone who doesn’t golf? Would someone’s affinity for golf be a predictor of success in say a Systems Analyst position? The answer is probably a no yet the perception is still the same. Our company is passionate about golf so you better be passionate about golf too.
Certainly something can be said for hiring individuals that work well with your team and adhere to organizational values but at what point does ‘culture fit’ start to rule out good candidates? The answer to that question is beyond the scope of this post but it’s certainly something to think about.
